his nose and told her to do the same.
“Move slowly and don’t jerk back,
especially out of fear.”
“Oh, right!” she muttered. “I can
hardly keep myself from running
right now.”
I put my hand right by hers, and
slowly we reached out together.
Finally we touched his nose. After
she had stroked his nose a couple of
times, his breathing slowed and he
nuzzled her.
I broke up an apple and handed
her a piece. She reached out with it,
but just as his nose touched her hand,
she dropped the apple and jerked her
hand back. Cashmere immediately
snorted.
“No, no, Cashmere,” I said, trying
to speak calmly. “It’s okay.”
