I helped Kaylynn get her shoes on
while Hannah bundled up our one-
year-old daughter, Caroline, whom
we called Linny. I grabbed a handful
of apples, we loaded into our pickup,
and we were on our way.
As soon as we arrived at the
pasture, Cashmere thundered his way
over to the gate by where we parked.
Hannah looked up at him through the
pickup window and gasped. “My
heavens! He’s huge!”
As I got out of the pickup, she
called after me. “You aren’t going to
get near him, are you?”
“It’s okay. Watch.”
I walked up to the gate, and he
reached his nose toward me. I rubbed
his nose. He could smell the apples,
