Reluctantly, she moved toward
the gate with me. Cashmere started
breathing excitedly. “Good boy,
Cashmere,” I said.
I kept talking to him as we moved
closer, keeping Hannah close beside
me with my arm around her. His
whinnying subsided, though he
breathed strong breaths. When we
were close enough, he shoved his
nose into Hannah’s chest, as if trying
to hug her with his head. This scared
Hannah, and she backed up. “He’s
trying to shove me away.”
“No, he’s not,” I said. “He’s
trying to tell you he likes you. It’s
almost like he thinks he knows you
already. Kind of like he did when I
first met him.”
I reached my hand out and petted
