so I pulled one from my pocket. He
threw his head up and down, begging.
I broke one into pieces and held it flat
in the palm of my hand. He gently
took it from me with his lips, tickling
my palm.
Kaylynn started to call, asking to
join me. I went back and pulled her
from her car seat.
“Are you sure?” Hannah asked.
I nodded. “It will be all right.”
When I got close enough to the
fence so that he could reach her, he
put his nose down to us and sniffed
her. His breath blew into her neck,
and she giggled. “Jackie,” she said.
I smiled. “Horsey. Cashmere.”
Kaylynn repeated what I said.
“Hosey. Casmer.”
