off, he raced along the fence as if


       trying to stay with us.  As we drove

       beyond the end of the pasture, I


       looked in the rearview mirror.  I

       could tell by the way he was moving


       his head that he was whinnying to us,

       even though I couldn’t hear him.


               We drove to the zoo and parked

       as close to a tree as we could, hoping


       for shade.  The zoo was one of our

       favorite places to go.  It had a little


       box at the front for modest donations.


       Since we were college students, we

       couldn’t afford too much, but we


       always put in some.  We

       had brought popsicles with us.


               Once we got to the zoo, Linny

       woke up.  The four of us went in and


       found a bench.  We sat down and

       Hannah, Kaylynn, and I started eating
