someone else. How angry that made her! He
knew it wasn’t true; and it was so hypocritical
when he was the one that was unfaithful.

Mother Davis tried to intercede in Rachel’s
behalf and had been beaten, too. Rachel wanted
to file charges against him, but Mother Davis
begged her not to. Matthew, scared that she
might, brought her all sorts of presents and
promised he would be better, a promise that
lasted only a few days.

When David was born, Matthew was again
off with someone else. Mother Davis and
Rachel’s own mother were again her only
support. But that was the last baby Rachel’s
