It was a lot of years before she and Matthew
had children, probably due to the fact he was
gone most nights. She had the mistaken idea that
a child might make him love her and even make
her love him, but it just made things worse. He
was furious when he found out she was pregnant,
beating her both physically and in spirit. The
night John was born, Matthew was out with
another woman, so she clung to her mother and
Mother Davis.

She tried to avoid pregnancy after what
happened when John was born. When she found
out she was pregnant with David, she was too
frightened to tell Matthew. She waited so long to
