work. He would spend it frivolously, and she
struggled to pay the bills with what little he left
her.
She often wondered what it would have
been like if she had married Jacob. Once, when
she suggested to Matthew that Jacob would not
have treated her as poorly as he did, Matthew
struck her over and over and forbade her from
mentioning Jacob again. But all of the threats in
the world couldn’t stop her from thinking and
dreaming about him.
She would dream that Jacob would come
and whisk her away with him. But reality would
set in, and she knew that, even if Jacob came
back, he wouldn’t take her. Ignoring the
obvious, she would still yearn for the impossible.
