than a year when Father Davis died. She had
hoped beyond hope that Jacob would be at the
funeral, but he wasn’t. She doubted that he even
knew about it. She wondered where Jacob was
and what he was doing. She wondered what he
thought of his own family. His own father, even
though he wasn’t in his right mind, had signed
the papers disinheriting him and disowning him.
His own mother had not stood up for him,
backing down to Matthew’s demands. And his
own brother had taken from him everything that
he cared about. However, Rachel knew that she
was the greatest disappointment of all to Jacob,
for she was what he cared about most, and she
could have been the one who made the outcome
different.
