anything. He still lived with his parents and
moved Rachel in there as well. And they had
only been married a month when he started
spending nights with other women. She could
remember the first time he hit her. He hadn’t
come home for two days, and when he did, and
she questioned him about it, he hit her and told
her it was none of her business. She wished she
had left him then, but she was too ashamed and
wondered where she could go. She was also
afraid of what Matthew would do to her.

      In order to buy food she had to get a job,
and all she could find was work as a checker at
the grocery store. Each time she received her
paycheck, Matthew took it, complaining it was
not enough for all of the things he wanted,
