Davis had lovingly tended to his needs as he had
become totally unable to take care of himself.
But, as much as she loved him, her tears on the
day of the funeral were more for Jacob and
herself than for Father Davis.
She felt so completely alone that day. The
man she truly loved and hoped would be there
was not. And Matthew didn’t even stick around
to be with the family after the funeral. He was
off somewhere, or with someone; she hardly
dared guess. A few members of her own family
came, and they were some support, but her
loneliness and disappointment were almost
unbearable.
She should have left Matthew then, but she
had grown to love Mother Davis and was worried
about leaving her alone with Matthew.
