a senator, or anything like that.

Rachel did note the return address change
from Washington state to Washington, D.C. after
six years, but there was nothing more. When she
finished, she knew a fair amount about Jacob’s
family, but very little about his life. What had
happened to him? How had he made his money?
How did he become a senator in such a short time
after leaving home, all while raising a family?

His letters were almost all just facts. He
obviously loved his family and was proud of
them, but he never shared feelings or thoughts.
She sensed that he had built a wall between
himself and his family and friends in Minnesota
made of the bricks of hurt and loneliness he felt;
