had imagined so many terrible things. She
expected only the worst.

      When she hurried into the living room, a
sharp-looking man in a business suit stood to
greet her, introducing himself as James Briar of
Briar and Thornton Law Office. She tried to act
calm. “Is there some trouble?”

      The man laughed. “Not for you.”
      His laugh and easygoing demeanor set her at
ease, but it was Mother Davis who filled her in.
      “Rachel, Jacob has asked this man to draw
up papers to make sure Matthew doesn’t come on
the property and harass us again.”
      The way Mother Davis said it, Rachel knew
it hurt her that such action had to be taken,
though she sounded as if she was resigned to the
fact that it was necessary.
