“Yes,” Mr. Briar added, “he wanted us to
ask you if you would like a restraining order
against Matthew, so he can’t bother you or your
children at all.”

A wave of relief swept over Rachel. Jacob
was still the good man she had known. She felt
ashamed that she had doubted him. “How much
will it cost?”

“It won’t cost you anything,” Mr. Briar said.
“Senator Davis will pay for it. But it could take
up to a week to get it before a judge.”

Rachel happily agreed to it, even though she
could see the sadness in Mother Davis’s eyes.

Mr. Briar asked lots of questions. He had to
know what kind of harassment had taken place
along with many other details. She also had to
sign a sworn testimony.
