A quick call to Mother Davis and
permission was granted. Rachel, letters on the
seat beside her, was soon hurrying down the road
as fast as her rusty old car would go. Her
thoughts were going much faster. What could
Jacob be sending a lawyer for? Was he planning
to make them move out of the house? He had
said Mother Davis could stay as long as she
wanted, and Jacob was always a man of his word.
But did she really know Jacob anymore? He was
so upset with her when he left. It must have
something to do with that. And, since she needed
to come home, he must be angry with her.
Maybe he was going to ask them to start paying
rent. She didn’t know if they could afford that
for very long. By the time she arrived home she
