Jacob brushed Emily’s bangs back from her
eyes. “Yes. Years ago, when I left here, I was
much like Joseph, alone and discouraged, and
God helped me. I don’t know what I would have
done without Him.”

      “Oh!” Emily said.
      Jacob knelt by her bed, and she did likewise.
He said a few words, and she repeated them.
They continued this way until they finished. He
then lifted her gently into bed. He tucked the
blankets around her and sang her a lullaby.
      When he finished, he kissed her forehead,
and when he turned, he was smiling a serene
smile, which faded the minute he saw Rachel. If
he was trying, in the slightest, to hide how he felt
about her, he wasn’t doing a very good job.
      Rachel sent John and David off to bed, after
