      Mother Davis spoke sternly. “Jacob, I’m

with family here!”
      Jacob looked at Rachel, and she could

almost read his thoughts and feelings from the
frown on his face. He turned back to Mother
Davis. “Mother, we wouldn’t be far away, and
you could visit anytime you . . .”

      Mother Davis cut him off in mid sentence.
“Jacob. I don’t want to go anywhere else. I
know this is really your house now, and you
could make me leave, but I would prefer to live
here until I die. This is the home your father
built for us; the home where I raised you and
your brother. This is the home that has all of my
memories. This is the home where Rachel and I
have struggled for the last eighteen years. And,
