thought about Mother Davis selling her house to
Jacob. Could she have been in contact with him
these many years?

After Jacob slid Emily’s nightgown over her
head, he pulled her onto his lap. “Now, young
lady, what story would you have me tell you?”

“Your favorite story from when you were
little.”

Jacob looked off, as if thinking. “Well, let’s
see. One of my favorites was about a man in the
Bible whose name was Jacob, just like mine.”

“What’s the Bible?” Emily asked.
Jacob turned and looked at Rachel before he
answered. “The Bible,” Jacob explained, “is a
book about God.”
Emily’s eyes got big, and she just said,
