which she, Jacob, and Mother Davis returned to
the living room. Rachel hoped she could finally
hear some about what had happened to him, but,
without the children, he didn’t want to stay, and
got right to the point.

      “Mother, the reason I came here is to talk to
you. I wanted to tell you that Anna and I are
building a new home here, and it should be done
by Christmas. We would like to have you come
live with us. We are going to build an apartment
on just for you. It will be totally self-contained
so that you can maintain your independence, but
we will be there to help you if you need it.”

      “But Jacob,” Mother Davis protested, “this
is my home.”

      “Mother, the stairs are steep and hard for
you to climb. This apartment would be all on the
