Rachel felt totally exasperated with Emily,
and wanted to get the children in bed so she and
Mother Davis could talk with Jacob alone. She
truly would have liked to have him to herself, but
she knew he would never allow that.
As soon as dinner was finished, she told the
children to get their pajamas on. “Oh, Momma,”
Emily complained, “do we have to?”
“Yes, Emmy, you have to.”
“Can Uncle Jacob tell me a story and tuck
me into bed?”
Rachel looked at Jacob questioningly. He
smiled at Emily. “Sure. Why not?”
Emily brought him her pajamas, and he
started to help her change. While he did, John
asked, “How did you learn to defend yourself
like you did against Father?”
