patted Emily on the head. “I suppose that will
just mean that you, John, and David will have to
be like Joseph.”

      Trying to delay the inevitable bedtime,
Emily begged for another story, but Rachel told
her she needed the sleep. She quit complaining
and started to giggle when Jacob hoisted her up
onto his shoulders. He gave her a ride in to brush
her teeth, then lifted her into his arms to carry her
to bed. As he set her on her bed, he asked, “Do
you want me to help you say your prayers?”

      “What are prayers?” Emily asked.
      Jacob’s voice was warm as if speaking of an
old friend. “Prayer is the way we can talk to
God. We tell Him things and He listens to us,
and even though we can’t see Him, He helps us.”
      “Has he ever helped you?”
