Jacob offered a simple prayer that, to
Rachel, seemed to be the most beautiful prayer in
the world. Perhaps it was just because it was
nice hearing him say it. When he finished, Emily
said, “I liked that.”
Jacob answered with a friendly pat on the
head. When he looked up into Rachel’s eyes, she
turned away. Even with Matthew gone these last
years, she hadn’t tried to go to church or teach
her children about God. She could sense that
Jacob knew it. She could only guess what he
thought of her.
Her uneasiness eased considerably when
Mother Davis pushed the bread in front of Jacob
to have him cut it. The atmosphere of the room
changed as the knife cut through the loaf, and the
comforting smell of warm bread wafted into the
