ready, she stepped to the door. She waited until
Jacob finished the story before she called them.
Emily slid from his lap and grabbed his
hand. “Come on, Uncle Jacob. You can sit by
me.” He smiled, but his smile faded quickly
when he turned and saw Rachel.
They moved into the kitchen, and Emily
guided him to a chair. As Mother Davis took the
bread from the oven, Jacob stepped up to help
her, but she gently told him he was a guest and
should sit down.
He took his seat next to a smiling Emily.
When everything was ready, Jacob bowed his
head. John and David looked at their mother
with uncertainty.
It had been so long since she had been at a
