that. I used to read to them before I lost my
sight.”

      Mother Davis shuffled off to the kitchen.
Jacob looked at Rachel and shifted uneasily, so
she told Emily to go get some books, and then
she slipped in to help Mother Davis.

      When she entered the kitchen, Mother Davis
was efficiently punching down the bread dough,
humming as she worked. Rachel knew that it
was a habit Mother Davis had when she was
trying to ignore someone. Why was she trying to
ignore her? Then it hit her. “Mother, you knew
he was coming, didn’t you?”

      Mother Davis continued to hum. Rachel felt
exasperated. “Mother, you did know, didn’t
you? How did you know he was coming?”
