Mother Davis continued to work as she
answered. “This is not the time, Rachel. We’ll
talk later.”

      Afraid her presence would make Jacob
uncomfortable, Rachel only stole glances into the
other room from the doorway. Emily was curled
up in his arms, and John and David were sitting
close while Jacob read. Seeing the four of them
there together warmed her heart. She wished it
could stay like this forever.

      She stayed in the kitchen with Mother Davis
while the bread rose and baked. The older
woman stubbornly refused to talk about anything
of importance, sticking to mindless chit-chat.
Neither of them seemed inclined to approach
Jacob, as if so doing would drive him away.
