Rachel could see Jacob wavering in his
determination. He glanced at her, and started to
protest again, but Mother Davis interrupted once
more.

      “The bread dough is probably all over the
counter by now. You just make yourself
comfortable while I get it in the pans. It will take
it just a short time to rise. Doesn’t homemade
bread sound good?”

      Before Jacob could even answer, she started
back to the kitchen. As she did, he lifted Emily
down, stood, and reached out and touched
Mother Davis’s arm. “Mother, can you make it
okay?”

      She laughed. “I’ve lived in this house so
long that I don’t need to be able to see to get
around.” She patted his arm. “Why don’t you
