Emily just giggled, so he went on. “The
first time I remember meeting her, I noticed that
she had those unusually pretty blue eyes and long
dark braids, just like you do. And she was just
your size.”
Emily looked back at her mother. “Really,
Momma?”
Rachel nodded and Emily turned back to
Jacob. “Wow! That must have been a long long
time ago.”
Everyone else laughed, easing the tension in
the room considerably. Rachel thought about
how long it had been since she had heard Jacob’s
laugh and how nice it sounded.
Emily drew closer to Jacob, and he knelt on
one knee, pulling her onto the other. She looked
up at him. “What’s your name?”
