“Well,” he said slowly, “I guess you can call
me Uncle Jacob.”
“Are you our father’s brother?” John asked.
“No!” Jacob answered quickly. Then a little
slower he added, “Not any more.”
John looked at his mother, but she just
shook her head at him, warning him not to pursue
it any further.
“Jacob,” Mother Davis said, “why don’t you
stay for dinner?”
Jacob shook his head. “No, Mother. I just
came out here for some business.”
Mother Davis shook a scolding finger at
him. “No business until after dinner.”
“But, Mother, I don’t think . . .”
“I am making homemade bread. It won’t
take long to cook, and we have raspberry jam.”
