Jacob’s gentleness made her feel jealous.
      But jealous of what or whom? She couldn’t

be jealous of Mother Davis. Was it possible she
was jealous of Jacob’s attention? Jealous of his
kindness? Jealous of . . . Was she jealous of his
wife, whoever she was?

      Rachel opened the door, and Jacob gently
led his mother into the house. He paused and
looked around, taking in his surroundings as if he
were a man waking from a dream, unable to
reconcile the imaginary with the real.

      “It hasn’t changed much,” he said,
seemingly as much to himself as to anyone else.

      Rachel felt very self conscious about her
house. She considered that he, being a United
States Senator, had probably been in some
beautiful mansions and associated with people
