“Jacob,” Mother Davis answered quietly,
“will you punish the children for the sins of their
parents?”

      No one said anything for some time, but
when Jacob did speak, he was much more
subdued. “Perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to just say
hello.”

      Mother Davis reached out her arm, and
Jacob linked it through his and carefully led her
back to the house. Rachel preceded them,
glancing back over her shoulder now and then.
Jacob’s tenderness with his mother made her
heart swell within her. Matthew had always been
so callous and demanding of everyone, even his
own mother. Rachel loved Mother Davis as if
she had been her own mother, and had even stood
up for her against Matthew’s abuse. Now, seeing
