stepped between Jacob and Mother Davis,
snarling angrily, “How dare you come back here
pretending to be something you’re not!”

      He swung at Jacob, but Jacob sidestepped
the blow, and in a quick motion, grabbed
Matthew’s arm, twisted it, and threw him to the
ground. Matthew was momentarily stunned, but
soon recovered and scrambled to his feet. “Why,
you dirty . . .”

      He took another swing, which was again
blocked, and once more Matthew was thrown to
the ground. This time, Matthew stayed there,
cursing and making threats toward Jacob.

      Jacob seemed unflustered as he looked
down at Matthew. “I’m no longer intimidated by
you or your threats, Matthew.”

      Out of nowhere, the sheriff appeared. When
