Davis stood unmoving, keeping his back to her.
Her anger started to ebb and her mind started to
focus. Suddenly, a memory sparked in her mind
— a memory that was almost too painful to
remember — a memory of a fateful, tragic
decision she had made many years earlier. Her
heart jumped as her breath came in a rush. Could
it possibly be? Could she truly know this
stranger?

      It seemed impossible. What she had
dreamed of and hoped for these many years
could not be coming true. Or could it? And for
him to be the one who owned the house was
surely too coincidental. Was her mind playing
tricks on her because she wanted something so
desperately? Surely that was it. She had
harbored an impossible hope for so long that it
