Jacob’s face flushed red with anger. He
didn’t say anything, so she continued. “Jacob, a
day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t regretted the
decision I made those many years ago, and . . .”

      He interrupted. “That’s water under the
bridge, and is probably inappropriate to even
speak about, considering the circumstances. I’m
sorry about your divorce, but it’s not my
concern.”

      His coolness toward her was worse than if
she had been slapped, but she was driven to
explain more. “Actually, the divorce was the
best thing that has happened to me in a long time.
He never was faithful, and the children and I put
up with his abuse for far too long. I was already
planning to divorce him when he filed.”

      Then Rachel thought of something else.
