had to be interfering with reality. Yet, her heart
told her it was he, even as her mind questioned
the plausibility of it.
She had to know. She spoke quietly, softly,
almost under her breath, hoping that if she was
wrong, he would ignore it. “Jacob?”
Slowly, deliberately, Senator Davis turned
until his steely eyes again seemed to be looking
right through her. After an awkward silence, he
finally spoke in a voice that was quiet, stern, and
free of emotion. “Rachel, it’s been a long time.”
At the sound of her name coming from his
lips, the past memories flooded her heart with
such force that she stepped forward to hug him
before she even thought about what she was
doing. He quickly stepped backward, away from
her, and the disapproval showing on his face
