venomously at those around him. “What about
visiting my mother?”

Rachel, feeling more confident, answered,
“You have never come out here to visit, except to
ask for money.”

Again, Rachel saw Jacob bristle at the
thought of Matthew’s attempts to get money.
Jacob spoke with authority. “We won’t keep you
from seeing Mother, if you choose to take her to
dinner or something. But you don’t need to
come here to do that.” Then, turning to the
sheriff, Jacob continued. “Sheriff, I’d appreciate
it if you’d escort this man from my property.”

The sheriff grabbed Matthew’s arm, but
Matthew jerked away. “I can take care of
