have sold it!” With that, he stormed away.

      The atmosphere seemed to soften
dramatically after Matthew drove off. The
sheriff shook his head. “I can hardly believe the
two of you are brothers.”

      “Actually, Matthew made sure we can’t
legally make that claim any more,” Jacob said.

      The sheriff looked at him quizzically, but
Jacob just shrugged. “It’s a long story.”

      Nodding, the sheriff returned to his own
vehicle, which was parked down the lane out of
sight. The dust cloud blowing up from the road
indicated his departure. After he left, there was
an uneasy silence, as if no one knew quite how to
proceed.

      Finally, Jacob turned back to his mother.
