brought her to an abrupt stop.
      “Rachel, I am married, and so are you.”
      Rachel wilted at the disdain in his voice as

she spoke, “I’m not.”
      Her voice sounded strange, even to herself,

as she trembled and tried not to cry.
      The change in Jacob was instant, and

confusion filled his voice. “You’re not? But I
thought that you must have remarried if . . .” He
stopped midsentence as he looked toward the
house where Matthew had gone.

      Rachel spoke quietly. “He left me for other
women, and I would never take him back.”

      “But he was asking for money?”
      “He found out that Mother Davis sold her
house, and he feels he should have some of the
money.”
