The man’s voice cracked from emotion, and he
paused briefly before continuing on. “To see Marine
reinforcements coming in choppers with the very flag
you are planning to burn emblazoned on the side,
watching them fighting their way through a hailstorm of
bullets, risking their lives to rescue brothers at arms that
they don’t even know.”
His voice quivered. “This country is not perfect,
and there are many things worthy of protest. But how
dare you burn the symbol of the freedoms you enjoy at
the very moment you are exercising those freedoms!”
He then turned back to Fred and those with him.
“It is true that this country is the greatest on the earth,
but it doesn’t just belong to you. It also belongs to each
man, woman, and child who never served in a war. It
belongs to mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters,
who have sons and brothers whom they will someday
welcome home, and to those who will never get that
