you were considered heroes. ‘The Greatest
Generation,’ people call you. Perhaps you sacrificed
for your country, but how much sacrifice is it to do
something for which you are honored?
“We know what it is like to answer the call of our
country and be sent off to a war that few agree with.
We know what it is like to fight in a snake-infested
swamp with bullets and bombs crashing so thick around
us that midday is black—a swamp that is full of the
blood of our dying and wounded friends. We know
what it is like to try to drag wounded men through mud
and sludge so heavy it feels like cement around our
legs.
“We know what it is like to have politicians in
Washington tell us we aren’t allowed to fire back and
defend ourselves even as the enemy is firing at us from
every direction.
“We know what it is like to come home with life-
