practice neither. You claim this country belongs to
every citizen but act as if it belongs only to you.”

      Fred and the other veterans withered with
embarrassment at the man’s strong words. This, in turn,
seemed to give courage to the man who had tried to
burn the flag. He stepped forward, smiling. “See?”

      At this point, the man with one arm turned angrily
toward him. “As for you, you disgust me!”

      The man with long hair shrunk back to his group,
and they seemed to cower before the one-armed man as
he continued. “You ride around on your ridiculous
motorcycles protesting anything and everything, and
then you go home at night to sleep in warm beds while
men are sleeping on the hard ground or in filthy mud in
a foreign land because that is what their country asks of
them.
