Everyone was silent for a moment, but then
another voice spoke out loud and clear. “Not so fast!”
I turned, as did everyone else, and saw three men
approaching. They were about the age of the oldest
protesters, but looked somewhat different. Their
clothes were rougher and their hair was not as long.
But what made them stand out was something else.
One was on crutches and was missing a leg. The shirt
sleeve of another hung limp at his side. He was missing
an arm. The third was in a wheel chair and had no legs
at all.
The three made their way slowly over and
positioned themselves between the two groups. The
man who was missing an arm stopped to face Fred, my
dad, and the others in their group. His voice was sharp
as he spoke.
“You and those like you tend to think this country
belongs only to you. Well, it doesn’t. You fought in a
