He pointed at the long-haired group that stood
behind him. “It belongs to these reprobates that would
desecrate the symbols of its freedoms. And it also
belongs . . .”
Once more, his voice cracked, and he paused
before he continued. “And it belongs to men like us
who have fought in an unpopular war and have seen our
friends, at the request of their country, die in a less-
than-worthy cause.”
He then reached in his pocket and pulled out some
money. He stuffed it forcefully into Fred’s hand. “And
since it is also my country, I, too, have a right to share
in requesting someone leave that would burn the
symbol of the country that I love.”
Fred looked down at the money and then up at the
one-armed man, the emotion showing in his face. The
one-armed man moved aside. Each of his two friends
struggled their way forward, and each pulled money
