from his own pocket and pushed it into Fred’s hand.
Then the three of them turned and gradually made their
way back toward the parking lot.

      No one else said anything for a brief moment.
Then, Daniel stepped out from the others. He walked
forward, pulled some money from his pocket, and
placed it in Fred’s hand. He then turned and walked
away. Each of the boys from our town silently made
their way forward, each placing some money in Fred’s
hand.

      When the last of them had come forward and
those with long hair stood alone, Fred retrieved the flag
from one of his group and held it and the lighter out to
the man who had originally tried to burn the flag.

      The man took them, looked momentarily at the
lighter, and then tossed it to the ground. With his group
close behind, he hurried to catch up to the one-armed
man and his friends. He stopped in front of them and
held out the flag. “Here. We’d like the three of you to
