The whole group of strangely dressed people
nodded their agreement, and the one-armed man looked
at his friends. They indicated their acceptance. The
one-armed man thanked them for the gift, and, taking it,
he placed it reverently on the lap of the man in the
wheel chair. As the group with the long hair went over
to their motorcycles, I noticed that Fred, my dad, and
the others were gathered around, talking.
They hurried and came and surrounded the one-
armed man and his friends, who were now almost right
beside the car I was in. Fred held out the money that
had been collected. “We would like the three of you to
have this.”
The one-armed man said he didn’t want it. Fred
looked at his group and then back at the one-armed
man. “What do we do with it?”
No one said anything. Eventually, the man in the
wheel chair motioned to his two friends. They talked
