Daniel was part of. Daniel, his friends, and other boys
from our community, were in the back. In front of them
was a group of men with long hair and strange clothes.
They had strange symbols on their clothes, and I
thought they looked stupid. There were also a few girls
dressed just as strangely, wearing beads and flowers. I
didn’t know any of those who were dressed strangely
and figured they must be the ones from out of town that
Daniel had said were coming.

Off to one side was a man that I did know. He
worked for the newspaper and was taking pictures.
Both sides were yelling things at each other, including
some threats. That made me scared for both Dad and
Daniel.

The man that held the flag turned toward the man
from the newspaper. He pulled a lighter from his
pocket, held up the flag, and, with a grin, he flicked the
