lighter. The second the lighter burst into flame, Dad
and his friends angrily surged forward. There was a
brief scuffle. Daniel and the young men from our town
just stood and watched.
The scuffle didn’t last long, and when it was over,
one of Dad’s friends had the flag and another had the
lighter. The long-haired people didn’t put up much of a
fight, and, in fact, seemed to want to lose. Their leader
then turned to the newspaper man and yelled things
about my dad and his friends. He used big words
including some I didn’t know like “fascist” and “Nazi,”
but I’m sure they weren’t very nice because the ones I
did understand weren’t.
All the people behind him, including Daniel and
those with him, joined in a chant, but I couldn’t tell
what they were saying.
Finally, after things quieted down, one of Dad’s
friends, whose name was Fred, stepped forward. I
knew he had served in World War II, and he was
