work.”
I didn’t understand what he was saying. But I
especially didn’t understand why, then, if he hated the
war so much, that he was upset that Daniel wanted to
protest.
I wondered if we had come so Dad could find out
if Daniel was there in defiance of what he told him. I
looked for Daniel but couldn’t see him; not at first,
anyway. But then I saw him with a group of his
friends.
I think Dad saw him, too, because I suddenly saw
Dad stiffen, and his face changed into an angry frown.
But he didn’t have time to do anything about it right
then because the protest was becoming chaotic.
There seemed to be two opposing sides. One was
my Dad’s friends, many of them wearing their uniforms
