The mares followed him for some


       distance and then gave up.  When

       Cashmere made his lap, he continued


       on to the gate where I was.

               He put his head over the fence


       and I stroked his nose.  “Are those

       old mares annoying you?  Can’t run


       with all of their attention, can you?”

       He threw his head up and down as if


       agreeing with me.

               The mares saw him at the gate


       and started in his direction.  Tor


       didn’t try to stop them, other than

       whinnying, asking them to stay.  A


       couple of them started toward

       Cashmere, but then turned back to


       Tor.  I think they must have had

       enough of Cashmere’s rejection.


               The other two continued on to the

       gate where we were and started
