money we had. There were times I
would have liked to buy her some
special present, or take my family on
a vacation, or just take a drive up the
canyon. But even the extra gas to
drive up the canyon might mean the
difference between having enough
money to buy food or not.
Feeling so trapped and
imprisoned by my own
circumstances, I could easily
empathize with the plight of the East
Germans, and I often wondered what
it would feel like to really be free.
As I turned onto the road the gas
station was on, my thoughts returned
to the new horse and my assignment.
By the time I arrived at the gas
station, the men were already there.
