I remembered hearing those
words the year before. I had been
coming home from a hard day at the
university, and President Reagan’s
speech had thrilled me. I wondered if
the Soviets and the East Germans
would really allow freedom to their
people. When I arrived at home, that
was all Hannah and I could talk
about.
“I don’t think there is anyway in
this world that it is ever going to
happen,” I had said.
“But just think,” she replied,
“what it would be like if those people
were able to move about freely.
What if those who were separated
from the ones they loved by that wall
were able to be reunited with them?”
